“I have to admit to initially feeling sceptical about undertaking a L5 HR Apprenticeship. I was totally new to HR and new nothing about the remit of the profession or what the apprenticeship itself would entail. “Bunny in the headlights” is an apt expression about how I felt following my induction.
However, 9 months later and with my hand on my heart I can honestly say that I have loved every minute of my learning to date. My role in school is growing as I work with my line manager and BePro mentor to widen my on the job experiences. I am now much more confident at undertaking HR-related activities in school, and even able to take the lead on seeking advice from our central HR service and advising my line managers as to the course of action to follow.
I really enjoy the CIPD modules and the learning I am gaining from these I am also sharing with colleagues and others from the wider education community. Coming together with apprentices on the workshops is a great way to learn about how HR operates in other sectors as well as share concerns and even frustrations in a safe environment. Lorraine (my mentor) always makes the CIPD workshops fun, offers constructive and timely feedback on the work I undertake and encourages me to be the best I can. We have a good relationship and I think that has really helped the progress I have made. The look on people’s faces when I tell them I’m a 44 year old mother of three doing an apprenticeship through work isn’t bad either!
